Not seeing is believing
Have you been hearing old wives’ tales about eye care for your child from people around you? Have you ever wondered how much truth there is in the advice?

MYTH: Eating carrots and steamed fish improve vision.

FACT: Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is essential for sight, but many other foods also contain this vitamin. Only a small amount is necessary for vision. A well-balanced diet, with or without carrots, provides all the vitamin A necessary for good vision.

Dicosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), with six unsaturated double bonds, comprises 30% of the good fat that is in the fish’s retina, brain and adrenal gland. The primary source for this is algae and coldwater fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon and sardines. As again, a well-balanced diet is the key to good vision.

MYTH: White fluorescent lighting is better than yellow light.

FACT:
Adequate lighting, whether white or yellow, makes reading easier and prevents eye fatigue.

MYTH: Using the computer is harmful to the eyes.

FACT:
Working on computers or video display terminals (VDTs) will not harm the eyes. BUT long periods of time using a VDT may lead to eye fatigue or strain. When using a VDT for long periods of time, your child blinks less often than normal, hence making the eyes dry, which leads to eye fatigue.

Working on a VDT is considered intermediate distance work, unless your child goes too close. Near work, including reading is related to myopia.

MYTH: Looking at the colour green is good for the eyes.

FACT:
There is no scientific evidence that the colour green produces a soothing effect on the eyes or helps prevent myopia.

MYTH: Outdoor activity is good for the eyes.

FACT:
There is emerging evidence that outdoor activity is protective against myopia in children. Outdoor activity, especially in early childhood, should be encouraged.

MYTH: Reading in dim light is harmful to the eyes.

FACT:
Reading in dim light causes no change in refractive error. For centuries, all nighttime reading and sewing was done by candlelight or with gas or kerosene lamps. However, good lighting does make reading easier and prevents eye fatigue.
